Ciudad de México, June the 14rd, 2017. During a week, Guanajuato will be the capital of Mexican wine. From august the 29th until September the 2nd, 2017, the City of Dolores Hidalgo, Home of Independence, will host the first edition of “México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles”, competition of wines and spirits dedicated to award and promote the greatest exponents of national industry.
Organized by the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, competition of wines with 24 years of experience, together with the State of Guanajuato’s Ministry of Tourism, the México Selection 2017 will act as an itinerant that will highlight national winegrowing regions every year. Under the heading “Following the vine way”, the contest will start in el Bajío, Guanajuato, and will tour the historical route through which the Vitis vinifera was spread in Mexico; in addition to documenting and explaining the history of wine and spirits, it will promote the brotherhood between all the producing regions in the country.
“Concours Mondial de Bruxelles aims to highlight the best wines and spirits. Also, we are a privileged observer of the market, and a trend discoverer.
“It is essential to us being present and participating in the rise of Mexican wines and spirits. Because of that, we decided to join up to promote national products” explains Baudouin Havaux, chairman of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
“With wine production, we assist to a moment of emergence of many wineries and new producing regions. Our competition is a way of making best Mexican products known, and we will be able to put light on it thanks to our links in media, both in Mexico and abroad”.
According to Havaux, the first edition of México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles will not only attract international focus, but also, as a foreign observer, facilitate an awareness raising about the richness of Mexican heritage concerning winegrowing and agave spirits, noble agricultural products with great artisanal value.
“We value two main elements in the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles’ arrival. First, acknowledging Guanajuato’s agricultural work for centuries on grape growing; and second, regaining sources of activity in the north of the state which, through grape growing and winemaking, secure employment.
“In terms of positioning of El Bajío, it needs to be said that there is a region with a great grape production, which is correctly making wine and, step by step, gains more visibility, both national and international. The arrival of the contest will also allow to make millions of Mexicans realize that Guanajuato, but also Querétaro and Aguascalientes, are a reality in terms of winegrowing history and culture, with many hectares under cultivation, and offer great wines and wine tourism”, noted Fernando Olivera Rocha, Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato.
The Museum of Wine, in Dolores Hidalgo, will be the meeting point for more than 30 experts from Mexico and around the world, who will be in charge of evaluating and awarding the best labels through blind tastings. During the tasting days, wineries from Guanajuato (Cuna de Tierra, Santísima Trinidad and San José Lavista) will offer guided tours and wine tastings to participants.
Wines, spirits and agro-alimentary products from the states of Aguascalientes, San Luís Potosí, Querétaro and Zacatecas will also be a part of México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, which counts with the acknowledgement of the Mexican Wine Council (CMV).
“For some years ago, the central region of the country has made clear that has some excellent wines, acknowledged both nationally and internationally. Now, it is time to reinforce with a local event and show that the state of Guanajuato is the perfect spot in Mexico for the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles”, says Olivera Rocha.
